The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board is throwing its full support behind a nation-wide “Toonies for Tuition” campaign to ensure that Catholic students in other Canadian provinces can attend Catholic schools.
Established by the Canadian Catholic School Trustees’ Association (CCSTA), “Toonies for Tuition” provides financial aid to Catholic schools across Canada in need of funding. Unlike Ontario, which enjoys the privilege of a thriving, publicly funded Catholic school system, in over half of Canadian provinces, parents must pay the full cost for their children to attend a Catholic school.
“Toonies for Tuition” is being championed by the board’s student trustees, Paige Wallace and Alice Okpere, and the Secondary Student Council Presidents who are fully committed to ensuring a successful campaign in order to support Catholic education for their fellow students in neighbouring provinces, says Superintendent of Education Julie Angiolillo.
Each of the secondary student council presidents will be collaborating with their school administration to provide activities to support Toonies for Tuition, but all schools and board administrative buildings are encouraged to participate.
“As we move forward, realizing that ‘We are many, we are one,’ together we can be the hope for other Canadian students,” says Mason Giovannangeli, Student Council President at St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary School.
This year’s goal is to achieve 100% participation across the system to assist our brothers and sisters in provinces where Catholic education is not supported through public funding, adds Angiolillo.
And as the campaign’s name suggests, support can be as simple as a toonie donation.

Stressing the importance of the initiative, Chairperson Patrick Daly applauded the student presidents for their commitment to assist students who are not as fortunate as those in Ontario.
“We are most grateful to and proud of the Student Trustees and Secondary Student Council Presidents for their tremendous Christian witness and goodness,” he adds. “On behalf of the Board of Trustees, Student Council Presidents and most especially, the children who will benefit from the HWCDSB’s generosity, thank you.”
“Our prayer is that through your collective goodness and support, many young people will be blessed with the gift of Catholic Education. The system-wide Toonies for Tuition campaign runs from November 14, 2022 to March 31, 2023.
